Be calm and relaxed

"Stress occurs when life does not meet our expectations. The cure for stress is to learn to accept life as it presents itself. When you accept the present moment, you can find ways to improve the situation." - unknown.

I agree with this 100%! By getting ourselves into a calm and relaxed state (mind, body and emotions), we are able to reduce stress, tension, anxiety or any other negative emotion or feeling. We hold on to the positive by being in the present moment. Not thinking about what has already happened or what is going to happen in the future.

Hypnotherapy allows us to get the mind, body and emotions into a calm and relaxed state so that we can penetrate into the subconscious mind to make positive changes that we desire. These behaviors can then become positive known associations in our subconscious mind. We can teach ourselves (through hypnotherapy and self-hypnotherapy) to be calm and relaxed, feel our heart rate slow down and reduce stress.

           Create a vision board

Can you see your dreams and your goals? Are they just within your reach? We call our goals our visions. We can see an outcome that is truly right in front of us.

Vision boards can be so effective because the things we place on our vision boards become within our reach. By looking at your vision board daily (and sometimes more), your visions or goals will remain in your subconscious mind - driving you forward to attain those goals.

Whether you do a vision board geared towards weight loss, financial gain or even boosting self-esteem, your vision becomes real!

Creating your vision board and seeing things come to fruition is one of the most amazing feelings!

Showing Compassion

           Compassion for others and yourself

Compassion is a desire to alleviate or reduce the suffering of another. It is a powerful emotion, a wanting to show special kindness to those who might be suffering. Compassion usually comes with empathy, wherein a person acting with compassion will seek to help those they feel compassionate for.

Think of someone in your life right now who may need help. Allow yourself to walk in their shoes and begin to feel empathy for them.

What do you have in common with this person? We need air to breathe, water, shelter and love. We want happiness. Think about how we are all the same in those ways. When you think of others, say to yourself, "Just like me, this person is (fill in the blank). Make this a part of your everyday life.

Open your heart to someone who is hurting or suffering and think about how you would like their hurting or suffering to end. There is a lot of reflection involved in compassion.

It's also important to show yourself compassion. Take care of yourself - make yourself a priority. It is not selfish, it is necessary. It's important to work on yourself and to become the best version of you!

Self-expectations

Realize your limitations and be ok with them.

Self-expectations create anxiety within you. These high expectations of yourself have been internalized from years of conditioning by outside forces - maybe your parents, a teacher or others you may have looked up to when you were young. When you feel you haven't met certain expectations, you may even feel as if you have failed. For example, if your father was a world renown cardiac surgeon and your grandfather was a brilliant brain surgeon and you faint at the sight of blood, failure has already set in. You went down a different path becoming an architect or something in marketing, but the expectations you put on yourself tell you that you aren't as good as dad or grandpa - even though you may be quite successful.

You are in control. You can decide that you will not tolerate needless outside interference or pressure. This is your life, and you can absolutely live it your way! There is no need to allow yourself to be swayed by the opinions of others. Just by making your self-expectations realistic and achievable, you set yourself up for success.

Stages of Grief

           Grief

There are five stages a person must go through to completely deal with a loss. Not every individual will display all the symptoms nor at the same time or manner. The stages are 1). Denial, 2). Anger, 3). Bargaining, 4). Grief, 5). Resolution.

           Denial or Isolation

is when we deny the reality of the situation. We block out the words and hide from the facts. This is a temporary response which carries us through the first wave of pain.

As the masking effects of denial or isolation begin to fade, the painful reality of death surfaces. We are not ready. The intense emotion is deflected and redirected and expressed as

           Anger

. This anger can be aimed at objects, strangers, friends, family or even the doctor treating the terminal illness. Anger can even be directed at the person who left us, leaving us feeling guilty for holding such anger.

The normal reaction to feelings of helplessness and vulnerability is often a need to regain control.

            Bargaining

helps us regain control with thoughts of, "If only..." "If only we sought medical attention sooner. If only we had gotten a second opinion." This is a weaker line of defense to protect us from the painful reality.

            Depression

can be a reaction to practical implications relating to the loss. Perhaps being worried about finances or that we have spent less time with others who depend on us. Sadness and hopelessness at the thought of not ever seeing or speaking to the person we have lost. It is so important to seek and accept the support you need.

           Acceptance

is a gift not afforded to everyone, especially if loss was sudden or unexpected. This phase is marked by withdrawal and calm.

There is no right or wrong way to grieve. There is no certain time limit to grieve. It is a very personal and singular experience. These stages can be experienced in any order than what is listed here, and a person can bounce from one to another and then back to a previous one.

Hypnotherapy can help with the grieving process, especially if you are feeling stuck. Hypnotherapy can't eliminate grief or sadness - it is important to experience some or all of the stages so that your mind can appropriately process the loss. Hypnosis can help you move through the stages with a better understanding and help you to physically and mentally feel calmer and more relaxed. It can help with stress, anxiety, sleep issues and lack of appetite associated with grief.

I recently listened to a podcast featuring Dr. Edith Eger. Dr. Eger is in her 90's and is a Holocaust survivor. She is by far the most inspirational women I have ever had the privilege to listen and learn from.

Sometimes it helps us to find someone or something that truly inspires us.

As Dr. Eger states - Nowhere on our birth certificates does it say life is easy. There are no guarantees or certainties, yet there is probability. Just by the way you get up in the morning, look in the mirror or look outside, or the way you begin to talk to yourself can change your body chemistry. We need to think first - think about what you are thinking. Pay attention to what you're paying attention to. By paying attention to your behavior, you are reinforcing that behavior in your subconscious mind.

Try not to ask, "Why me?" Instead ask, "What am I holding on to and what am I willing to let go of?"

Remember, no one can reject you except you.

These are just a few of the things that I heard in that podcast that truly inspire me.

Remember...today you are in charge of your thinking, your feeling and your behavior. Go out and find something that inspires you!

New Beginnings

Welcome new beginnings, even if something has to end.

When we begin something new, whatever it may be, often times something needs to end first. We usually don't think of it this way. Saying an affirmation like, "I welcome new beginnings, even if something has to end", is like writing yourself a permission slip to allow something new into your life.

Sometimes things just run their course - endings to careers, love relationships, friendships, etc. You could also end bad habits, like eating poorly or smoking. Or you could invite in a new journaling practice or reading to end a habit of sitting on the couch watching TV.

An ending doesn't mean that something has to come to a halt; there can be a soft ending, a tapering or a distance. When we can allow ourselves to welcome new things into our lives, we keep the door of possibility always open. Every day is new and exciting and full of wonder.

I welcome new beginnings, even if something has to end.

Emotional Eating

           Using Food to Cope

Many people use food to cope with negative feelings. Whether those feeling are a result of being sad, lonely, bored, depressed, angry, frustrated or anxious - it really doesn't matter at all.

Eating when we are not hungry makes it take so much longer to lose excess weight. By turning to food for comfort when we feel down (or any negative feelings), we have learned that that comfort is very short-lived. It does not solve any long-term problems or issues.

Emotional eating only increases your issues by adding on excess weight and is just a temporary distraction.

The key is to look for healthier ways to distract yourself. Journaling gets those feelings out of your head and onto paper and you may be able to identify your triggers. Calling a friend, reorganizing a drawer or closet, or taking your dog for a walk are also great distractions.

You've heard, "If you don't buy it, you won't eat it" and this is a very true statement! So, clear your pantry and refrigerator of unhealthy foods. Stock up on things that are healthy for those in between meal snacks.

Accept yourself as the wonderful, unique and creative person that you are. Also, accept that your emotions (positive and negative) are an essential part of your whole personality.

Instead of eating to fill an emotional void, find constructive ways to deal with your feelings!

           The Power of Releasing Guilt

Guilt is an affective state in which a person experiences conflict at having done something they believe they should not have done. ("I did something wrong.") Shame is a person's inner experience of being not wanted, worthless, rejected or cast out. ("I am wrong.") Many people get guilt and shame confused. With guilt, there is a feeling of responsibility or remorse for an imagined wrongdoing. There is self-judgement - they know society expects something different. Guilt is a "controllable behavior". Shame is how one sees him or herself. It is an "uncontrollable behavior".

So, how do we, as hypnotherapists, help or change feeling of guilt? First, we focus on the behavior, not the person - accept them for who they are and make them aware they are doing the best they can. Second, help them become accountable - accepting responsibility is empowering because it leads to solutions. Third, discover judgments and release them - judgments are often coping mechanisms used to hide behind the problem. Lastly, identify strategies for change - finding ways to "right a wrong". Whether you struggle with guilt or shame, hypnotherapy can help!

           Mind Development

When you are born, your mind has 4 things: Fight (your stress), Flight (how you escape it), a fear of falling and a fear of loud noises. That's it. From the time you are born until you are about 8 years old, the lower part of your mind is developing. This is your subconscious mind. You take in everything and don't question anything. It's like a gigantic sponge! Some things are positive known associations (you know you like to be hugged) and some are negative known associations (you don't like to be kicked). Around age 8-9 the middle portion of the mind, the Critical Mind, is developed. This serves as a gatekeeper or filter to the subconscious mind. It won't let anything in that it does not already know (positive or negative). Around age 9, the conscious mind is developing. This is our logic, decision making, rationalization and willpower - our thinking mind.

Perhaps at a young age you learned from mom that smoking relieves her stress. She was angry and yelling one day and told everyone to leave her alone. She said she was so stressed out and was going out to smoke a cigarette. That's all it took! Fast forward 20 years and you have stressful job. Chances are you will start to smoke because that's what your subconscious mind knows. When you've had enough and decide to stop, you are not able to until that known association in your subconscious mind is changed. Through hypnotherapy, we get the mind, body and emotions in a very relaxed state and are able to penetrate that Critical Mind, find the known association of "smoking relieves my stress", and we can change it. Perhaps you realize that "mindful breathing can relieve your stress", so we are able to change the known association and you can become smoke free!

The subconscious mind is very powerful (approximately 88% of your total mind. The conscious mind (the part you think with) is only approximately 12%. Pretty amazing!

Tuning into your emotions

           Emotional Numbness?

Maybe you have been experiencing some sort of emotional numbness inside. You feel like you don't know yourself at all or how you feel about different situations or how they will affect you.

People tend to block their feelings for a number of reasons, but probably the most common reason is to protect themselves in some way. Maybe you got hurt by someone in the past and by not allowing yourself to feel emotions, you can prevent yourself from feeling that hurt again. This leaves you feeling emotionally numb.

We all need to feel the lows in life, the highs and even the in-betweens.

Using hypnosis and your wonderful subconscious mind, you can make the changes which you desire. Wanting to make a change is the hardest part, but the rest is easy because you want it! There are so many emotions - love, hate, sadness, anger, etc.

Going back in your mind and remembering times when you felt one emotion or another, you can get in touch with that emotion again. By giving that emotion a color, a shape or a form and keeping it with you can truly help you tune in to your emotions.

Self-esteem, Confidence and Motivation

You are worthy of all things positive

From the time we are born until we are about 8 or 9 years old, our subconscious mind is forming. We take in everything and don't question anything. The way we feel about ourselves, our worth, so to speak, comes from primary caregivers and the world in which we live. When we are told things like, "You're not good enough" or "You need to try harder" or "You'll never amount to anything", the way we feel about ourselves is pretty low.

Picture in your mind that self-esteem (the way we feel about ourselves) is like the roots of a tree. The branches of this tree are our confidence in ourselves. The leaves are our motivation. Now that you have that picture - think about what happens when those roots get cut or don't get water. That tree starts to die. So, what happens to the branches and the leaves? They also begin to die or disappear. When we can't see our own worth or don't feel good about ourselves (low self-esteem), it becomes increasingly difficult to make any kind of positive change in our lives. We aren't motivated to make the positive change most likely because we don't think we can make the change (low self-confidence). When we don't have the confidence, how motivated are we to try and make the change?

Hypnotherapy is a fantastic tool to build up self-esteem, confidence and motivation. Learn to love yourself and know that you are worthy of good health, love and happiness!

Many people ask how they can make the changes in their lives that they truly want. Whether it is financial, relationships, careers or something totally different, you are in complete control of the way your life goes. If you are not attracting what you want, it's probably because you are repeating the habits and the energy which got you to where you are currently. Learn to switch it up - take a different route to work, change your morning and nighttime routines or change your energy flow. The more you think about something, the more you are throwing it out to the universe that that is what you want - even when it is not. Be specific in what you ask for! For example, you may want a relationship with someone who likes you for who you are, has energy to match yours, who is honest and trustworthy, who enjoys spending time with you as you do with him. Someone who is communicative and shares feelings. Someone who makes you laugh and laughs with you. But often times, we ask why do I keep attracting the same types of people into my life? People who lie and cheat and are not at the same place as me in life? Just by saying those words - you are attracting that which you don't want. Change the energy!

Fear and Anxiety:

           Fear and Anxiety

Fear is an emotion of alarm or agitation caused by an expectation of danger. Anxiety is a state of uneasiness or distress about future uncertainties. Both have different degrees and vary from person to person.

We always have choices in how we react or respond to situations. When we react to a situation, we are coming from a subconscious fight/flight reaction to danger. The ability to reason is what gives us the ability to "choose" our response. In every situation, we have the ability to choose. Choice is freedom and when we can choose our response, we empower ourselves.

Some common reactions to fear and anxiety:

Feeling helpless or out of control

Being in a constant state of stress, worry or helplessness

Some common responses to fear and anxiety:

           Choosing survival

Choices that don't work are not necessarily good or bad - it's just that they worked, or didn't work.

I have a choice and I can choose to focus on success

Everything our subconscious learns can be unlearned or relearned a different way.

Think positively - it empowers you!

Most people think that in order to forgive, it means that you condone a certain behavior - that you are ok with the way you were treated or the way someone spoke to you. But forgiveness is all about releasing and letting go of negativity - not allowing it to take up any more space in your mind. By letting it go , you free up space for the positive things in your life.

The past is represented by guilt. The future is represented by worry. When we forgive, we release ourselves from the guilt of the past. It is so important (yet not entirely easy) to forgive. Whether you are forgiving others who have hurt you or forgiving yourself for choices you have made, words you have used that hurt others or if you are simply forgiving that person who cut you off on the freeway this morning - you are releasing negativity and even guilt.

We can't change the past. We can only accept it, take the lessons we learned and forgive all who need to be forgiven.

So, today, try to start the process of forgiving in order to release and let go of negativity. You will feel so much better!

"The past is history, the future is a mystery, and today is a gift, which is why it is called the present." - Unknown

Sometimes we find it difficult to be in the present, but when we remain in the past, we experience feelings of guilt. When we try to anticipate the future (fear of the unknown), feelings of worry are stirred up. But by being in the present, we have acceptance.

It is so important to close the door to the past. Take the lessons learned and bring them to the present, forgive whomever needs to be forgiven (and that includes yourself!) and close the door to the past. Forgiving does not mean condoning a behavior, it simply means letting go of the negativity that is taking up space in your mind and allowing room for the positive. We don't necessarily forget when we forgive - as to not let certain things happen again. We can't worry about the future because the future is not promised. Think of it like this - you walk into an ice cream shop and you see a big sign that says, "Free ice cream sundaes tomorrow"! You can't wait to come back and get your free sundae. You walk in the next day, tell the clerk you are there for your free sundae. He gives you a puzzled look and you point to the sign and tell him you were there yesterday. He promptly tells you that the free sundae is tomorrow! So, you see...tomorrow never comes. It simply becomes today!

By living in the present - one day at a time - you have acceptance and ready yourself to take in the positive!

Common Misunderstandings on Hypnotherapy

There are many misunderstandings that can cause you to have the wrong idea about hypnosis. Here is some truth that will help you have a better understanding of hypnotherapy and what it can do for you.

Hypnosis does not cause anyone to lose their free will. The facilitator of the hypnosis cannot make a person do anything against their wishes. During hypnotherapy, you remain aware of everything that is happening. You can reject the suggestions of the hypnotist if you do not like where you are being guided. Clients still have full control over their actions and will do nothing that contradicts their values or personal standards. There is no mind control taking place. In other words, your hypnotist will never make you cluck like a chicken or perform any other embarrassing actions.

Hypnosis does not put you to sleep. You merely enter a relaxed state that resembles unconsciousness due to similar physical reactions such as slowed breathing, relaxed muscles, decreased activity, and closed eyes. A more accurate description is that hypnosis is a state of altered consciousness, which, when achieved, still allows you to be fully aware of your surroundings. It is similar to meditation or any activity that relies on a person’s concentration to narrowly focus. There is also no need to worry about not waking up from a hypnotic trance. Everyone always emerges from their hypnosis state. If a client is failing to exit the trance, they will simply drift to sleep and will no longer be hypnotized upon waking up. There are no known risks when working with a trained hypnotherapy practitioner.

It is commonly assumed that only those who are mentally weak or uneducated can be hypnotized. This is not true, as hypnotism does not require lowered mental capacity. In fact studies have found that those of above average intellect, who have a capacity for creativity and vivid imagination, are better suited for hypnotherapy. Every time we use our imagination, intensely concentrate on something, or daydream, we enter a form of hypnotic trance. This means that everyone is able to undergo hypnosis. The only caveat for hypnotherapy is that the person must be an active and willing participant.

Hypnotized clients will not reveal deep, dark secrets against their will. You will not be forced to share anything about yourself that you do not wish to. However, hypnotherapy is able to help clients learn more about themselves that they may have never known or had previously forgotten. This can aid in creating a greater understanding of actions, feelings, and experiences that might have been confusing to them.

There is also a belief that hypnotherapy does not work, but this is false. There is abundant evidence that proves it is effective. It is backed by a variety of scientific and medical organizations, such as the American Medical Association, British Medical Association, American Psychological Association, and British Psychological Society.

5 Problems Treated by Hypnotherapy

Hypnotherapy has many different perspectives and preconceptions surrounding it, both positive and negative. The fact remains however, that hypnotherapy has been found very effective for treating certain conditions and issues. Below are five problems you can treat with hypnotherapy.

Hypnotherapy can help with addiction, such as smoking cigarettes. Out of all the available methods to end an addiction, hypnosis holds the highest success rate. Using the traditional form of hypnotherapy, a trained hypnotherapist will direct suggestion to help to remove the desire from the mind. Once the patient is in the trance, they will be asked to visualize all the negative effects associated with smoking. This includes the unpleasant lingering smell of the smoke and how cigarettes hurt the eyes and nose. The hypnotist will then suggest that the patient will be fine without smoking. They will then ask them to remember a negative effect every time they feel the need to reach for a cigarette.

For those suffering with post-traumatic stress disorder, hypnotherapy can be used as a treatment. For about a quarter of those who develop PTSD after a traumatic episode, the only effective treatment may be a hypnotic method. This is because 25% of people find that talking about the trauma can cause the problem to worsen and they will continue to remain severely disturbed. Hypnotherapy through means of the use of regression is one of the ways to handle the problem. This process involves the patient being taken back to the traumatic experience so they can relive it and understand that all the danger is in the past. This helps the person to realize the threat no longer exists and does not hold the power that it once did. Hypnosis can improve quality of life and assist in dealing with the trauma. Phobias can be treated this way, as well.

Hypnosis has proven to be effective for those with depression. Hypnotherapy can help ease the burden of this psychological disorder. A hypnotherapist will try to address the person’s perception of what led them to have issues with their mood and self-esteem. This treatment option can allow those with depression to deeply relax, have their cortisol levels lowered, and feel instantaneous relief from the condition. They will also be asked to engage in more healthy behaviors and thinking patterns. Stress is another issue that can be improved with this process.

Studies have found that hypnotherapy is effective for managing acute and chronic pain. Research has shown that hypnosis is valuable for reducing cancer pain, pain from burns, rheumatoid arthritis, and the anxiety and pain related to surgery. During treatment, the patient is able to tune out their conscious mind by relaxing and blocking out distractions. Once they have access to their unconscious mind they will focus on a singular idea or thought, and can target the pain to reduce it.

Allergy symptoms can be reduced with hypnotherapy. Research has found that focusing on an environment free of allergens can decrease hay fever symptoms by one-third.

Hypnotherapy for Weight Loss

Those who have the highest probability of success with hypnotherapy for weight loss are the unconscious and emotional eaters. These individuals have trouble sticking to weight-loss plans due to the lack of willpower to follow it. The therapeutic use of hypnosis is helpful because it teaches clients to gain more willpower. The goal of treatment is to change the association the person has with food. Instead of thinking of food in the wrong way, hypnosis works to deeply ingrain the notion that food is fuel. Once a healthy relationship with diet is attained, this will be critical in facilitating the weight loss journey.

During a session, the hypnotherapist speaks with a patient to develop a better understanding of what their goals are, what triggers them, what their body type is, and what diet plans have worked or not worked. This information is pivotal to shaping the suggestions the hypnotherapist will make under hypnosis. The session typically lasts only 20 to 25 minutes, and the time is spent to balance out the voices in the person’s head with more constructive thoughts. The focus is placed on amplifying the inner voice coming from a healthy subconscious. This leads to more reliance on inner wisdom, and less on the emotional portion. Hypnotherapy will not make the patient’s cravings go away, but rather teaches them to counter the thoughts with healthier judgements. They will be able to recognize that while they feel the desire to do something, they do not have to act on it.

A vast number of hypnotists want patients to attend about six sessions in total in order to achieve the best results. Modifications to automatic thinking can be seen after only two appointments. If a positive effect is not experienced after three sessions, this may indicate that hypnotherapy for weight loss will not be fruitful for this particular patient. Those suffering with mental health disorders that involve brain-pattern fluctuations, such as bipolar disorder or schizophrenia, may not want to pursue this route to slimming down. Deep hypnosis can act as a trigger to those individuals, so patients should speak with their psychiatrist first.

Optimism is the greatest contributor for the success of hypnosis. If the patient believes that weight loss can be achieved, they are setting themselves up for success. The expectation of gaining positive results is crucial. A hypnotherapist will suggest to patients to put their body first by respecting and protecting it. They are led to believe that overeating is causing damage to their body, and therefore the behavior is not healthy.

What Is Hypnotherapy, and How Does It Work?

Hypnotherapy is a form of therapy that is intended to have a positive influence on the patient while they are in a state of unconsciousness, referred to as hypnosis. A trained hypnotist relies on guided relaxation techniques to conjure feelings of extreme concentration, relaxation, and/or focus to reach a heightened level of awareness. The trance the patients are under is similar to being completely engrossed in a television show, book, music, their own thoughts, or meditation. While in this state, clients are able to turn their focus inward and utilize what is already inside them to make modifications or reclaim control over parts of their life.

This type of therapy is frequently used to provide assistance with psychotherapy, since the tranquil state of mind is able to get people to learn more about themselves. They are given the opportunity to explore emotions or memories that are concealed from their conscious mind. The clients can work through painful and suppressed feelings that they would have otherwise not know about. The adjustment in consciousness can provide patients with the tools to better handle encounters outside of hypnosis. Hypnotherapy is able to put people in a comfortable state of being that is more conducive to suggestion and discussion.

There are several techniques that can be utilized for hypnotherapy, of which the hypnotherapist will determine the correct method for their patient. The two most popularly used are suggestion therapy and analysis. Suggestion therapy is dependent on how well the client is able to respond to the hypnotherapist’s suggestions while in the hypnotic trance. This approach is commonly used as a means to curb unwanted behaviors such as smoking, nail biting, over-eating, or gambling. It has also shown to be beneficial for treating pain, and increasing positive behaviors including confidence or motivation. This type is better suited for simpler problems and can be used to cure many phobias.

The practice of analysis hypnotherapy is also known as regression therapy. Hypnotherapists rely on this method to discover the psychologic root of the issue that is not accessible to the conscious mind. This has been found to be advantageous for cases of social anxiety, past trauma, or depression. Hypnotherapy is able to dig into the mind of the client to retrieve the repressed memories or early developmental trauma that could be responsible for the problematic behavior or psychological conditions. This is not intended to fix or change the behaviors of patients, but rather locate the cause that can be subsequently treated through psychotherapy.
