For example, let’s say a client was punished at a very young age for not eating all of her meals. There’s a high likelihood that she would associate the negative feelings of being punished with not clearing her plate well into adulthood. So, rather than stop eating when she is full, she continues to eat until her food is gone, leading to weight gain. With hypnotherapy, we can help diminish those negative feelings and help the client have a healthier relationship with food.
In addition to negative feelings associated with punishment, many people feel guilty about uneaten food on their plates. They feel like they’re wasting it, so rather than throwing it away, they continue to eat, even to the point where they feel sick or uncomfortable. They may also beat themselves up about occasionally indulging with the food they eat. We want to help our clients see that leaving food on their plate or having a cookie don’t have to be bad things. Hypnotherapy allows us to counsel clients while they are most receptive to it, leading to bigger changes in both health and lifestyle.
